Episode 65: Jen Adams

Episode 65 – Jen Adams

8,800km adventure Bikepacking the Log Drivers Waltz & Tour Divide

In the latest podcast episode, I chat with Jen Adams, an extraordinary individual whose love for the outdoors and bikepacking transcends the mere act of riding. Embarking on a bikepacking journey is not just about the miles covered or the destinations reached; it’s about the stories woven into every pedal stroke and the connections forged with nature, communities, as well as other fellow adventurers.

Jen’s story is one of passion, determination, and a profound commitment to inclusivity in the sport of bikepacking. With a background in ski marathons, backcountry canoeing, and ultralight hiking, Jen’s transition into bikepacking seems almost predestined. Alongside her husband Eric, she embarked on an 8800-kilometre journey across North America, an experience that not only tested their limits but also solidified their bond with the bikepackingcommunity.

Their creation is the Log Driver’s Waltz — an 800-kilometre circuitous bikepacking route around Ottawa — is a testament to their dedication to the sport and their desire to make it accessible to all. The route, named after a beloved folk song, encapsulates the beauty of the Ottawa and Gatineau valleys and offers a challenge to riders of all levels.

But Jen’s contribution to bikepacking doesn’t stop at route creation. She’s a champion for diversity and participation, hosting panels and workshops aimed at underrepresented groups in the sport. Her efforts are breaking down barriers and paving the way for a more inclusive bikepacking community.

During the episode, Jen recounts her experiences on the Tour Divide, the buzz of being in Banff, at the start line of such a huge event, the challenges faced along the route, pedaling through thunderstorms and enjoying moments of sheer awe at being immersed in the beauty and raw power of nature.

So, if you’re looking for inspiration, a push to start your own bikepacking journey, or simply a tale of adventure that warms the heart, you will no doubt find yourself planning your next trip before the podcast even ends. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the next to ride the Log Driver’s Waltz or take on the Tour Divide.

I thank Jen for reminding us that bikepacking is more than a sport—it’s a way of life that embraces the outdoors, cherishes community, and celebrates the spirit of adventure. Listen now, and let the wheels of inspiration carry you to your next great adventure.
