Episode 124: Jippe Witteveen

From the Netherlands to the Middle East – Join the Cycle

In this episode guest Jippe Witteveen’s shares his epic journey from his home in Friesland, Netherlands, to the Middle East was.

Motivations for the adventure

Jippe embarked on his bike tour with a mission he called “Join the Cycle.” His journey spanned an impressive 8,000 kilometres from the Netherlands to Iran, with the aim of blending his passion for sustainable travel with his academic background in international relations. For Jippe, the goal was to discover the common threads that unite humanity across diverse cultures and landscapes.

Embracing the Challenges

One of the key themes from Jippe’s journey was the balance between excitement and adversity. From having to problem solve when his bike frame broke in Sarajevo, to pushing bikes through steep gravel paths and braving thunderstorms, he shares his insights on both the physical and emotional demands of long-distance cycling tours.

Cultural Connections and Hospitality

The biggest highlights for Jippe from his travels were without a doubt the encounters he had with strangers on the road. He shared stories of spontaneous invitations into homes across Eastern Turkey and the Balkans, highlighting the region’s renowned hospitality. These connections with locals, often in regions less traveled, provided him with deep insights into the local culture, traditions, and disparities that are often glossed over in mainstream narratives.

The Balkans and Middle Eastern Intrigue

For Jippe, the Balkans represented an unexplored territory filled with a complex and rich history that fueled his curiosity. He rwas especially motiated to learn more about the intricate socio-political backgrounds of countries like Bosnia and the cultural vibrancy of Kurdistan, Iraq. As he pedalled through these regions, Jippe gained firsthand experiences about areas often misrepresented in Western media.

Reflections on Sustainable Travel

A recurrent theme in Jippe’s story is the emphasis on sustainable travel. He shared his internal struggles with societal and environmental responsibilities and how he hopes he is able to influence change by seeking to raise awareness of more sustainable practices when it comes to travelling.

For me what came across overwhelmigly when I spoke with Jippe was how there is a great power in travel being a tool for education and change. His experiences highlight how taking a bike adventure like this can connect cultures, break stereotypes, and foster personal and societal growth.
