Cycling the Long Way Home. A 2.5yr Journey from Melbourne to Cushendall, N.Ireland

The Long Way Home

In 2022, David McCourt set off on an adventure that many would only dream of – an extraordinary cycling journey from Australia to Northern Ireland. He aptly called it “The Long Way Home” as he looked to make it all the way back to his hometown village of Cushendall in N.Ireland.

This journey would span over two and a half years, and was filled with captivating stories, challenging experiences, and profound lessons.During the episode David shares the highs and lows of his cycle tour, highlighted numerous times by the generosity of the incredible people he met along the way. Here’s a closer look into David’s remarkable adventure.

The Journey Begins: Australia to Central Asia

David’s journey commenced in the vast landscapes of Australia, where he experienced the country’s rugged beauty and challenging terrains. From the Great Ocean Road to the Mawson Trail, David traversed some of Australia’s most iconic routes. A memorable highlight was cycling through Central Australia, where he felt truly isolated yet invigorated by the unique vastness of the landscape.

Unfortunately, David’s adventure took a sharp turn when a scooter accident in Broome, Western Australia, forced him to return home to Melbourne for surgery and rehabilitation. Despite the setback, David maintained his resolve, eager to continue his journey once healed. After months of recuperation, David restarted his adventure in Bali, Indonesia, beginning his journey through Southeast Asia.

Exploring New Horizons: Southeast Asia and Beyond

Cycling through Southeast Asia, David experienced the warmth and hospitality of local communities, particularly the cycling federation in Indonesia that welcomed him with open arms. Despite the tropical heat and challenging terrains, he pushed forward, island-hopping from Bali to Sumatra and eventually making his way to Thailand and Bangladesh. Each country offered a new cultural tapestry, with vibrant marketplaces, stunning landscapes, and the complexities of navigating visa requirements.

David’s route through Central Asia was anything but straightforward, taking him through the spectacular yet demanding Pamir Highway and the remote Wakhan Valley in Tajikistan. These rugged mountains and valleys, with their breathtaking views, offered some of the most memorable yet challenging cycling of his trip.

Navigating Cultural Richness and Unexpected Friendships

One of the most striking aspects of David’s journey was the consistently warm reception he received from locals in countries less traveled by international tourists. Whether enjoying a home-cooked meal or sharing stories over a bottle of vodka in Uzbekistan, David found connection through shared humanity.

David’s approach to the unknown and unfamiliar was characterized by his openness and adaptability. These qualities were essential when facing unexpected hurdles, such as visa challenges entering Turkmenistan or illness encountered on the road. Still, he persisted, driven by the thirst for adventure and connection with people along the way.

The Final Leg: Reaching Ireland and Reflecting on the Journey

As David approached the final chapters of his journey, cycling through the scenic landscapes of Europe and ultimately to the shores of Ireland, he faced mixed emotions—eagerness to reach home mingled with the bittersweet end of an epic chapter in his life.

Returning to his home village of Cushendall, David was greeted with warmth and celebration from family and friends. This emotional culmination, paired with personal trials such as the passing of his uncle, framed an incredibly profound homecoming.
