Episode 96: Peter Gostelow
7 months bikepacking the Jordan Bike Trail, Saudi Arabia, Northern Kenya and Tanzania
In this episode I catch up once again with seasoned bike tourer Peter Gostelow as he recounts his seven-month journey across Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Northern Kenya and Tanzania.
A Grand Journey: From Jordan’s Trails to African Vistas
Peter’s recent adventure spanned from the heart of the Jordan Bike Trail through the vast deserts of Saudi Arabia, and into the lush, albeit muddy, roads of northern Kenya and Tanzania. Known for his preference for the road less traveled, there was a sense of both travelling back to the familiar as well as encountering completely new experiences.
The Thrill of the Unexpected
Camping in an elephant corridor in Kenya? Check. Taking on Jordan’s notorious steep gradients? Done. Peter’s stories transport us to the thrilling and sometimes unnerving moments of his travels, like crossing Lake Turkana in a wooden boat amidst Nile crocodiles, relying on front brakes after losing his rear ones, or the unforgettable sense of vulnerability and excitement when encountering wild elephants near his camp.
Navigating Through Challenges
Peter highlights the logistical challenges of travel, such as water scarcity in the Kenyan terrain compared to the surprisingly abundant water sources in Saudi Arabia. His meticulous planning often includes side quests and detours, each bearing its own set of challenges and rewards. Whether dealing with steep descents or unexpected obstacles, Peter’s adaptability shines through each anecdote.
Cultural Connections and Genuine Encounters
Peter’s journey wasn’t just about landscapes but also about the people. From the warmth of Kenyan hospitality to navigating cultural norms, especially as a solo male traveler versus the experiences of female travellers.
Peter’s reflections on African accommodations paint a vivid picture of simplicity and authenticity. Whether staying in basic guesthouses or securing a spot in a community with straw huts by the lake, these choices underscore his preference for genuine experiences over luxury.
Photography as a Narrative Tool
As an avid photographer, Peter’s bike adventures are as much about capturing the world through his lens as it is about moving through the landscape slowly on a bike. His evocative photographs tell stories that words sometimes can’t fully capture, whether it’s the stark reality of a teenage pregnancy in Kenya or the joy of simply cycling through breathtaking vistas.
Follow Peter’s future adventures unfold
For adventure enthusiasts and those who dream of exploring the world on two wheels, Peter Gostelow’s narrative is a treasure trove of insights down the road very much less travelled. Whether you’re a seasoned bike tourer or an armchair traveler, his stories offer a glimpse into the relentless beauty of the world. I can tell there are many more adventures to come so give him a follow on his instagram and also check out his brilliant website.
