Episode 95: McKenzie Barney

Cycling the World – 29,000kms, 5 Continents, 28 Countries

Recently, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Mackenzie as she opened up about her 29,000km journey cycling the world—a feat that took her across multiple continents, through diverse cultures, and one which taught her so much about herself.

Over a year removed from the completion of her expedition, Mackenzie has had ample time to reflect on the experiences that shaped her and the profound lessons she’s thought about since then.

The Journey Begins

Mackenzie’s adventure began not with a structured plan, but as a leap into the unknown. Starting from Vietnam with little more than a backpack and no bicycle, she embraced the raw challenge of the journey. From here, her path would eventually wind through Europe solo, proceed down the length of Africa with her partner James, and stretch across Australia, New Zealand, and the expanse of South America.

Solo Travels and Finding Community

In our conversation, Mackenzie shared the solitude and the striking independence she felt traversing the Bolivian Salt Flats. It was in these stretches of empty landscape that she learned the importance of maintaining a positive mental outlook, reminding herself of past triumphs to overcome the present challenge. This time alone was vital for understanding the internal landscape and appreciating the people and relationships that, while physically distant, were always with her in her thoughts.

The Role of Writing and Reflecting

Throughout her travels, Mackenzie kept detailed journals, documenting not just the physical journey but her evolving thoughts and realisations. Our discussion highlighted the contrast between her filmmaking, a visual art of capturing fleeting moments, and the book she’s currently writing—a deep dive into the nuances of her experience. By transforming these personal reflections into a book McKenzie hopes to inspire others to pay attention, be astonished, and share their own stories.

Adventure Redefined

For Mackenzie, the concept of adventure has shifted. Where once it might have meant the tangible triumphs of external achievements, now it aligns more closely with inner growth. Today, she defines adventure as anything that heightens awareness and prompts introspection, whether it be through confronting the chaos of the unknown or finding beauty in the stillness of the present. Her reflections exemplify the beauty of adventure—embracing uncertainty and finding oneself amidst the chaos.

Cycling the World Film

You can learn more about McKenzie’s journey via her film “Cycling the World‘, while it was never her intention to set out on this journey and document it visually, being a filmmaker at heart, it’s not a surprise that McKenzie did indeed produce something which really showcased her journey.
