Episode 94: Laura McMillan

Bike Touring Adventures Across the Most Isolated Landscapes

In episode 94 I share the story of guest, Laura McMillan – a seasoned bike traveller. Laura has traversed some of the most challenging terrains across the world, from the vast landscapes of Namibia to the rugged trails of the Baja Divide, and most recently, the rich cultural expanses of Africa.

A Journey Born from Curiosity

Laura’s passion for biking has roots in her early years, spurred by a cross-country bike journey across the U.S. at the age of 16. This unforgettable experience sparked a lifelong love for adventure and exploration. Fast forward to the present day, and Laura is cycling through Africa, immersing herself in the cultures, landscapes, and communities that the continent offers.

The Thrill of the Unknown

Something that is obvious when hearing Laura talk about her adventures is her love for isolated and expansive landscapes. As she elaborates in the podcast, the challenge of cycling through places like Namibia, with its vast desert stretches and unpredictable weather, provides a sense of vulnerability and self-reliance that is both daunting and at the same time exhilarating. These are places where daily challenges like water scarcity and endless corrugated roads test her resilience, yet they also reward her with unparalleled beauty and moments of profound introspection.

Connecting with Cultures

An integral part of Laura’s journey is her deep interest in the cultures and people she encounters. She shares heartwarming stories of interactions with local tribes, such as the Himba in Namibia, and highlights how these experiences enrich her understanding of the world. Her travels are often a blend of awe for the landscapes she cycles through, as well as respect for the diverse cultures she encounters, learning as much from people as from the landscapes around her.

The Flexibility of an Unstructured Bike Tour

Throughout her travels, Laura has transitioned from a structured travel itinerary to a more organic and flexible approach. This shift allows her to pause in the unexpected and soak in the serendipities of travel, whether it be lingering in a town for its good food or simply resting to recharge. She emphasises the importance of listening to one’s own body and mind, acknowledging when to push forward and when to rest.

Finding the Joy in Simple Things

Laura’s ability to find joy in the simple things—whether it’s a breathtaking vista, a tiny pine cone, new cultural insight, or the perfect avocado sandwich—makes her a true ambassador of travel. I’m sure as you listen to her talk about her experiences from her bike adventures, that you’ll be reminded of the incredible tapestry of experiences that await when we step outside and embrace the journey before us.

Laura is currently on a long bike tour through African with her partner Alee. For those interested in following her ongoing adventures unfold, you can find her on Instagram under the handle @Laurabikesandsnacks
