From Army Precision to the Freedom of Cycling

Jess’s early years couldn’t be more different from her current life of cycling freedom. At 17, she joined the Australian Army, embracing a disciplined lifestyle that couldn’t be further from the free-spirited world of adventure she lives today. It was a hiking trip in Nepal that ignited the flame of change—an experience that nearly prompted her to go AWOL. Jess broached this contradiction with humour and reflection, signalling a pivotal turning point in her journey from strict regimentation to a life bubbling with spontaneity and freedom.

The Bond with India

One of Jess’s most evocative tales is her cycling journey through India, an adventure initiated by an invitation from her bike’s manufacturer, Noel. As they cycled from Vizag to Bangalore, Jess found herself completely immersed in the multifaceted layers of Indian culture. Rolling through small lanes and connecting with locals on an emotional and spirited level, she discovered the transformative magic of India.

“India is the place. There’s this space. You don’t see any cycle tourists there… you can cycle India for the rest of your life and ride a new road every day,” Jess reflected on the podcast. Her vivid portrayal of this journey presents India not as chaotic or overly intense but as a land full of untapped routes and welcoming people.
