Episode 77: Tara Weir

Solo Journeys. 45,000kms Bikepacking Through 24 Countries.

In this episode of Seek Travel Ride, I had the pleasure of speaking with Tara Weir, a seasoned adventurer who has cycled over 45,000 kilometres through 24 countries. Tara’s journey is a testament to the spirit of solo female travel, resilience, and the joy of slow travel. From the challenging terrain of the Silk Road to the remote landscapes of Mongolia, the experiences Tara shares from these adventures are incredibly insightful.

Tara’s love for cycling began in 2011 when she participated in an organised tour through Tibet and Nepal. Captivated by that experience, she has since undertaken numerous multi-year journeys as a solo female traveler. Her adventures have taken her through some of the most diverse and isolated landscapes in the world, including the Australian Outback, Patagonia, and the Western Wildlands Route in North America.

One of the highlights of Tara’s journey was her experience cycling through Mongolia. Describing it as a “wild camping paradise,” Tara shared how the vast, open landscapes and the warm hospitality of the local people left a lasting impression on her. Despite the challenges of navigating remote areas, Tara found a sense of mindfulness and peace that kept her motivated to continue her journey.

These adventures are not without their challenges. She recalled a particularly tough day in Kyrgyzstan, where she faced heavy snow and freezing temperatures while climbing the Kyzle Art Pass. Despite the difficulties, Tara’s resilience and determination saw her through, and she emerged from the experience with a reminder on the unpredictability of mountain weather.

Throughout her journeys, Tara has cultivated a life that allows her to balance her passion for adventure with her work in forestry. By working seasonally, she can save enough money to sustain her travels while maintaining a sense of community and stability at home.

Tara’s story is a great reminder that adventure is not just about the destinations but also the personal growth that comes with taking these journeys. Her experiences have certainly enriched her life, providing her with a deeper understanding of herself and the world around her.
