Episode 125: May Tettero
Finding Flow with Bikepacking

From Cycling Roots to New Beginnings
May Tettero’s initial bond with cycling began in the Netherlands, a country synonymous with riding bikes. Growing up, cycling was very much a a way of life. However, this connection changed abruptly when her family immigrated to Canada when she was just 13yrs old. Moving from a bike-friendly culture to a car-centric one, May found herself longing for the independence and freedom cycling once provided.
Rediscovery of Passion
Years later, after establishing her career and raising her children, May rekindled her passion for cycling. Inspired by her son Sky, a catalyst for her renewed biking adventures, May embraced the world of bike packing which perfectly blended two of her passions, cycling and camping. Together they have also taken challenging routes like the Baja Divide.

A Journey with Profound Encounters
One of the most poignant anecdotes May shared was her encounter during a bike-packing trip along the Camino de Santiago. It was a journey she took to process the grief of her mother passing away. On a day marked by introspection and mild melancholy, she crossed paths with a Ukrainian pilgrim traveling in the opposite direction. This brief yet meaningful interaction left her with a deep appreciation for her own life’s abundance and the privilege which comes with being able to take bike adventures.
Biking Beyond Boundaries
May’s commitment to challenging age-related stereotypes is as remarkable as her rides. Whether tackling parts of the Baja Divide with her son Sky or contemplating solo night rides, she is a great example of defying the traditional notions of what is possible with age. She is proof that adventure has no expiration date, and the deep fulfilment of embracing life’s contrasts, be it the discomfort of a long ride or the joy of overcoming it, is a timeless pursuit.

The Road Ahead
As May prepares for her next adventure, bike-packing the Sicily Divide with Sky, her story continues to inspire both seasoned cyclists and newcomers to the world of adventure cycling. Her experiences remind us that the bike is not just a vehicle for travel but a means of connecting deeply with oneself and the world.
