Episode 113: Jesus Estrada
A 7000km Cycle Tour of Mexico

In this episode I feature guest Jesus Estrada, and his experiences cycling nearly 7,000 kilometres through the diverse landscapes of Mexico. This was a perfect way for Jesus to not only embrace the idea of slow travel, but to also learn more about his own country, it’s culture, history and people.
Embracing Adventure: Preparation and Philosophy
One of the great points Jesus shared is that no amount of preparation will ever be enough for what you will encounter on the road. At some point you just need to make that decision and take the first step. For Jesus this was by buying his plane ticket, something which all of a suddeen made the adventure real despite the uncertainties.
Discovering the Diverse Landscapes of Mexico
The route Jesus took traversed the Baja Peninsula, Pacific coast, and mountains, as well as taking him to the ancient Mayan temples of Chiapas and beyond. Each region offered unique cultural and natural experiences, from the coastlines and beaches perfect for surfing, to the lush jungles of Chiapas with its rich archaeological heritage. It ended up being the perfect way for Jesus to learn about the diversity of Mexico’s landscapes which he says was portrayed to him like a tapestry of ‘different Mexicos’ within one nation.

The Power of Connection: People, Nature, and Self
One of the highlights of this journey was the profound connections Jesus was able to make along the way. He shares heartwarming stories of the hospitality shown by strangers, who quickly became friends, and the emotional farewells which subsequently followed. For me a real powerful experience which Jesus shared was when he said it took him five days to get in contact with everyone who helped him out along the way, once his journey was over. A real powerful statement showing the kindness he received from complete strangers. Jesus also found companionship in unexpected places, such as with the dogs he’d meet along the way – some joining him on his travels for stretches of the road.
Culinary Adventures: Mexico’s Rich Gastronomy
Another element of diversity within Mexico is its cuisine and Jesus shared his culinary journey where he sampled an array of foods and drinks. Jesus fondly recalls the delight of trying local specialties such as machaca burritos and prawn tamales, emphasising food as a gateway to understanding the Mexico’s culture and lifestyle.

Reflections on Freedom and Community
Jesus also reflected on the rush of freedom he felt traveling by bicycle—a sense of liberation unmatched in any other experience. Community is a subject which I raise with guests of the podcast and Jesus acknowledges that this freedom of bike travel is often beautifully intertwined with the need for community. While Jesus’ first instinct when the adventure came to an end was to immediately plan out his next trip, he realised he actually needed to take time out, to reflect on the journey and not rush to the next moment. I especially appreciated his approach regarding post adventure blues. Jesus now values spending more time with family and friends – something he wasn’t able to do while he was on the road. He also relishes the opportunity he now has to host fellow travellers, and the joy of reminiscing about the experience through documenting his adventure.
