Episode 102: Malachi Frances
Cycle Touring Adventure from the UK to Australia – The Journey So Far

Ever thought of going on a long distance bike tour from the Uk to Australia? Well in this episode I chat with Malachi Frances, who is currently half way through doing exactly that. I’ve often thought embarking on a long-distance cycling journey requires a unique blend of courage, resilience, and curiosity. Malachi gave insights into his transformative journey, which blends personal challenge, unexpected friendships, as well as enjoying the serendipitous moments that occur when experiencing life on the open road.
Learning by Doing – a Welsh Adventure
Malachi began his journey with a touch of naivety, purchasing his first “proper” bike not long before setting off. What started as a simple desire to travel and explore on two wheels quickly evolved into an epic adventure across continents. By his own admission, he didn’t plan extensively for the challenges ahead, thinking at first that the Welsh hills would be an easy ride. However, the trip swiftly taught him about endurance and adaptation. But Malachi also learnt that he could deal with these challenges
Making Fast Friendships on the Road

While Malachi set out from the UK intending to travel solo, the journey soon became a tale of shared experiences and camaraderie. He began his ride with Ralph, a friend who decided to join him through Europe. Along the way, Malachi met Jamie Hargreaves, forming an instant connection that would see them traveling thousands of miles together. This camaraderie extended to other fellow cyclists along the way as well such as Dragos, Ben, and Sam – illustrating the fast friendships which are possible when meeting other bike travellers on the road.
Facing Challenges Head-On
Like any grand adventure, Malachi’s journey was not without its trials. From battling brutal headwinds in Kazakhstan to cycling through vast, solitary deserts, he faced numerous physical and mental challenges. Yet, these ordeals only enriched his story. When fellow traveler Dragos was injured in Kazakhstan, it underscored the vulnerabilities inherent in such undertakings, and the critical importance of resilience and mutual support.

Unexpected Hospitality
A recurring theme in Malachi’s story is the kindness of strangers. From truck drivers offering food and water in remote areas to locals inviting him for breakfast in Germany, the journey reaffirmed his belief in the goodness of people. These small yet profound acts of kindness provided motivation during challenging times, offering a reassuring reminder of human connection across cultural and geographic boundaries.
Adapting to Change and Embracing the Unknown
Flexibility became a cornerstone of Malachi’s adventure, as he learned to adapt his plans and route in response to unforeseen circumstances. Whether it was ditching a meticulously planned route early in his trip or dealing with bike issues, his ability to remain open to new experiences and pathways greatly enhanced his journey.

Reflections and Looking Forward
With the vast landscapes of Europe, the challenges of Central Asia, and the vibrant cultures of India behind him, Malachi’s journey is also a story personal growth and adaptability. As he plans to venture into the Himalayan region, the lessons he’s learned and the friendships he’s forged will undoubtedly continue to shape his epic ride to Australia.
Malachi story paints a vivid illustration of embracing the unknown and the transformative power of travel. His story encourages us all to step outside our comfort zones, open ourselves to new experiences, learn from every challenge, and above all, to cherish the friendships and moments of kindness that punctuate our life’s journey.
