Journey From the Road. A Solo Bike Tour from Spain to China

Have you ever dreamt of taking an adventure so big, it might take years to complete and in the process change your life forever? Sara Qiu did just that when she set off from her home in Spain with the aim of cycling all the way to her parents’ hometown village in China. A journey to connect with her roots.

Sara’s incredible journey, began in April 2022. Growing up in Spain with Chinese parents, Sara often faced the question, “Where are you from?” This curiosity about her roots sparked the idea of a long-distance bike tour, a journey that would not only answer that question but also offer countless life-changing experiences along the way.

Her adventure took her through Europe and Central Asia, and we caught up for this interview just a few months after Sara entered China.

One of the most touching aspects of Sara’s journey is the hospitality she encountered. From families in Turkey who welcomed her into their homes to strangers in remote villages offering help, Sara’s experiences highlight the universal kindness that exists in the world. She shares heartwarming stories of people who went out of their way to assist her, making her journey not just about the physical challenge but also about the connections she made along the way.

But this journey is not without its challenges and Sara talks candidly about the fears she faced, the physical exhaustion, and the moments of doubt. Yet, she also shares how these challenges helped her grow, pushing her to overcome her fears and continue on her path. Her mantra, “I try deliberately to do the things I fear so they won’t be a fear anymore,” is a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from facing our fears head-on.
