Episode 54 – Robert Fletcher

Octogenarian Odyssey. Cycling over 26,500km from Alaska to Argentina in your 80s

Imagine embarking on a cycling journey that stretches across continents, climates, and cultures. Now, picture doing that at the age of 80. This isn’t a fictional tale; it’s the true story of Robert Fletcher, an octogenarian who defied age stereotypes and embarked on an epic e-bike adventure from Alaska to Argentina. His story is not just about breaking records; it’s about shattering expectations.

After being inspired by the TV series The Long Way Around, The Long Way Down and the Long Way Up, Robert wanted to do something different to celebrate turning 80. He decided that, rather than simply cutting a cake and blowing out some candles he would ride a bike from Alaska to Panama. As he progressed on his trip he decided to change the endpoint from Panama to Ushuaia making the entire journey over 26,000km (16,000 miles) in length.

Robert’s journey, dubbed the “Octogenarian Odyssey,” is a testament to his indomitable spirit and love for adventure. With each pedal stroke, he traversed through the rugged Alaskan wilderness, the bustling streets of Central American cities, and the breathtaking landscapes of South America. His travel anecdotes are filled with encounters with generous locals, challenges of nature, and the sheer joy of being on the open road.

The podcast episode takes us through the inception of his grand idea, the meticulous planning, and the support of a diverse crew that made this record-breaking ride possible. Robert’s reflections are not just on the physical aspects of the trip but also on the mental resilience required to push through the tough days. His candid sharing of the highs and lows of such a monumental undertaking is both humbling and inspiring.

Robert’s tale is more than a cycling narrative; it’s a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to chase your dreams. His adventure encourages us to look beyond societal norms about aging and embrace the endless possibilities life offers. For anyone who has ever doubted their capabilities or let age define their limits, Robert’s story serves as a rallying cry to set your sights high and pedal towards your goals.
